Within Tibetan Buddhism, Green Tara represents the union of wisdom and compassionate activity.
The Green Tara Empowerment & Sadhana teaching of the Martsang Kagyu lineage which derives from Atisha, is not only a union of wisdom and compassion but is also considered powerful in aiding good health and removing obstacles in other aspects of life, for example your career. Green Tara made a vow to always be born as a woman to help human beings, as the following tale explains.
Many millions of years ago, in a different world system, there lived a young princess named Yeshe Dawa. For quite a number of aeons she made offerings to Tonyo Drupa, the Buddha of that world system, who gave her special instruction concerning bodhicitta - the heart-mind of a Bodhisattva.
During this time there was great inequality between men and women, and so Yeshe Dawa made the following vow, "I have developed bodhicitta as a woman. For all my lifetimes along the path I vow to be born as a woman, and in my final lifetime when I attain Buddhahood, then too, I will be a woman."
The Martsang Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is an ancient lineage, so we adhere to the ancient culture within modern teachings. Therefore His Holiness Gangri Karma Rinpoche will perform a short Buddhist Refuge ceremony on the day within the Martsang Kagyu system. This is necessary before the Empowerment takes place at our centre.
If you have attended the Green Tara teaching and have received the empowerment you are welcome to attend the centre’s student run Green Tara chanting practice sessions throughout the year.
