Phowa

In Tibetan Buddhism, phowa is widely known as the “transference of consciousness at the moment of death. Extraordinarily, it is also the fastest way to obtain an enlightened state.

The practice of Phowa is taught exclusively by Lamas initiated into the Martsang Kagyu lineage. In this lifetime, the results of Phowa can be obtained instantaneously, and the practice itself prepares one to encounter one’s own death with great equanimity, knowing that the consciousness doesn’t die with the body.  Phowa can be practiced in two ways: the first is to practice and obtain the fruits of this tradition for oneself, and the second is to facilitate this enlightenment process for another person at the moment of death. The latter requires the practitioner to have achieved the highest performance and experiences, in the instructions on transference in order for the phowa to be successful.

Only a highly achieved performance Master has the capacity to transfer a person to pure land, by virtue of the Masters complete practice. This is also a precious opportunity to transfer one's consciousness to the pure land for non-practitioners. However, it will depend on a person's individual karma as to whether they are successful in remaining in the Pure land or returned to samsara.

The lineage of Martsang Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism is most fortunate to have an excellent scholar and practitioner, His Holiness Gangri Karma Rinpoche who has the expertise to perform a Phowa for those who may request it for a friend or loved one. However, certain requirements will be necessary.
